Thermostats are an important part of your home. After all, they help you control the amount of heat and air your home gets. Yet, there are many different options for the types of thermostats your home can have.

If you are looking to learn about the types of thermostats you can choose from, this article is for you. We will share what a thermostat is and how they work. We’ll also cover things you should consider when buying a thermostat.

What Is a Thermostat?

A thermostat is a device that is used to regulate the temperature in a room. When the room becomes a certain temperature a thermostat will activate specific settings to do one of two things.

The first thing a thermostat will do is maintain the temperature of a room. The second thing a thermostat will do is raise or lower the temperature to meet the desired setpoint.

How Does a Thermostat Work?

Thermostats act like a brain for your home’s HVAC system. The operational functions of a thermostat have two different classifications. Those classifications are a low-voltage thermostat and a line-voltage thermostat.

Low-voltage thermostats are typically found with central HVAC systems. The HVAC systems use electricity, oil, gas, and water heating systems.

How a low-voltage thermostat operates is by allowing you to control the air current. This makes it easy to use controls that are programmable for better temperature accuracy.

Line-voltage thermostats operate within a single heating system. For example, they are used in baseboard and radiators. A line-voltage thermostat has a connection that flows through into the heater.

There are some differences in how these thermostats operate. Low-voltage thermostats differ from line voltage thermostats because they operate on 24V to 50v. In contrast, line-voltage thermostats operate on 240V.

A low-voltage thermostat also controls the flow of air more efficiently than a line voltage thermostat.

Another difference between a line-voltage and a low-voltage thermostat is its operational abilities. A line voltage can shut off before an entire room reaches a set temperature. This problem doesn’t usually happen with a low-voltage thermostat.

Types of Thermostats

The types of thermostats that are available are growing. Yet, there are a few types of thermostats that are most common.

The first kind is an electronic thermostat. These types of thermostats are built on technology to detect temperature changes in a room.

Electronic thermostats can be wireless or touch screen. They can also use machine learning technology that will predict your temperature preferences. Electronic thermostats can be controlled wirelessly or with a remote.

Its features and functionality depend on the brand you choose for your thermostat. Electronic thermostats come in both low-voltage and line voltage.

The next thermostat that is most common is a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat allows you to pre-program the system.

Whatever you set the thermostat to, it will adjust the temperature itself. For example, if you were out of town, your pre-programmed thermostat can keep your home at room temperature. If that is the desired set point.

Some programmable thermostats also allow you to control the temperature of your home from anywhere. The benefit of that is you will be able to conserve energy, which reduces your expenses and the maintenance needed on your AC.

Another type of thermostat is a manual or mechanical thermostat. These thermostats are a basic low-cost way to maintain the temperature in your home. If you want to control the temperature you have to manually turn it on and off.

At one time, these types of thermostats were the most popular. Yet, when it was discovered that they contained mercury, many homeowners looked for alternatives. These types of thermostats can experience variations in their accuracy as well.

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Thermostat

It can be helpful to know which thermostat is right for your home. Yet, with many different types of thermostats to choose from, the decision can leave you feeling unsure. As you decide which thermostat is right for you, there are a few things you want to consider.

For starters, the type of thermostat you choose should make sense for the type of climate that you will experience. For example, a programmable thermostat is ideal for you if you live in a place where temperatures tend to have drastic shifts.

You also want to consider what level of energy you plan to use. The reason being is some thermostats are eco friendly. This means they can help you save energy.

If that is something that is important to you, then you should consider buying a programmable thermostat. Another thing to consider is how much your thermostat will cost.

All thermostats are not the same in functionality. For this reason they will differ in cost. Thermostats that use technology such as Wi-Fi or having learning abilities will be at a higher price point.

There is one last thing to consider if you plan on choosing a thermostat that has built-in Wi-Fi. If you ever lose connectivity for some reason your thermostat could be affected.

While there are different types of thermostats you want to make sure you select one that is going to meet your needs. If you want to learn more about a thermostat that is right for your home we are here to help.
