Nothing is more fun than swimming in the summer. Owning a pool can be an excellent place to make memories with your family and unwind in the sun. It’s the perfect way to spend a weekend.

Unless, of course, your pool can never reach an even temperature. Sometimes, weather conditions cause pools to become too warm or too cold. Many people invest in a pool heater to solve this problem.

However, getting a pool heater is only part of the solution. It’s necessary to perform pool heater maintenance to ensure the best performance.

Fortunately, several DIY pool heater maintenance tips can help you ensure your heater performs efficiently. We’ll explore some of these tips in the pool heater maintenance guide below!

Venice, FL, Pool Heater Maintenance Starts with the Heat Exchanger

The first thing to do in your pool heater maintenance is clean the heat exchanger. If you’re unfamiliar with this term, don’t worry. All this means is the set of copper or nickel-finned tubes at the combustion chamber’s top.

At least once a year, remove the exchanger. From there, clear out any leaves or other debris from the exchanger’s fins.

Sometimes, you may see some corrosion buildup between the exchanger fins. If so, there’s an easy to clean this. All you have to do is use a wire brush to scrounge the stuff away.

Pool Heater Maintenance: Cleaning the Heater Floor

Like the rest of your pool, the heater floor becomes dirty throughout the year. Often, the floor becomes covered with leaves, dust, and rust. To ensure the heater functions correctly, you’ll have to clean this floor at least annually.

So, let’s talk about how to do this. First, locate the heater below the burner tray. Once you find it, remove any leaves and debris from your floor.

You may need a brush or vacuum to get a deeper clean. Likewise, keep the drain holes around the side of the heater.

This way, moisture can escape the heater. This escape prevents the floor from building corrosion.

Search for Water Leaks in the Heater

Pools naturally leak water over time. Most of the time, this isn’t a significant issue. However, water leaking inside the heater can cause problems.

When water leaks inside the heater, it can cause the metal panels to rust. Even worse, the water can also reach the wiring. When this occurs, it causes rust to form on the wires and weakens the heater’s overall efficiency.

Inspect Your Burner Flame For Missing Flames or Dull Colors

Remove the burner shield and inspect your burners. When you do, ensure that they store their flames and that the flames are blue.

If you see any rows without a flame or with red/yellow flames, you likely have a problem. The issue could vary; a weak exchanger, low gas pressure, or a flawed gas regulator could cause it. In these cases, it’s best to call professional services.
