Did you know that the World Health Organization recommends keeping our homes between 18–24º C (64–75 Fahrenheit)?

In order to keep your home at the right temperature, you’re going to need two things: a heating or cooling system, and a thermostat.

Modern thermostats have been around for decades in one form or another, but today there are three main types of thermostats that you’re likely to have in your home.

Read on as we take a closer look at the different types of thermostats

1. Non-Programmable Thermostats

As the name suggests, these are thermostats that you need to control manually.

These usually involve a simple dial that you adjust to change the desired temperature. If you want things to be warmer, you need to manually change the dial. If you want things cooler, go turn that dial again.

The downside of these types of thermostats is that it’s you, rather than the thermostat, that has to do most of the work. It also means that if you don’t make any manual adjustments, your home remains at one temperature throughout the day, even if you’re at work, or in bed.

You could end up heating or cooling an empty home and wasting money.

2. Programmable Thermostats

Programmable thermostats make life a bit easier. These thermostats allow you to set different desired temperatures for different times of the day or even different days of the week.

You can program the thermostat to turn down when you’re out at work during the week, and then return to your desired temperature when you’re home.

These thermostats offer more control but will repeat the same patterns over and over, so if you’re going away you’ll need to remember to manually change things.

3. Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats give you the most control of all.

A smart thermostat is a wifi thermostat that you can control with your phone, even when you’re away from home. If you forget to turn the heating off, you can just pull out your phone from wherever you are, and turn it off with a tap.

The best smart thermostat will also use your location to control your heating. If you’re away from home, your system will turn off to ensure you’re not heating or cooling an empty house. When you return, it will fire up again, as if by magic.

Some smart thermostats will even learn your habits and optimize your heating based on your behavior. Not only do these types of thermostats give you much more control, but can also save you money by ensuring you’re only heating and cooling when you actually need it.
