Have you noticed that your AC is leaking water? When you see water in your attic or on your ceiling, it could be an indication of air conditioner issues. Fortunately, with routine service and some troubleshooting, you can fix a leaky problem.

Keep reading to learn 5 common reasons your air conditioner is leaking water!

1. Watch for a Clogged Drain Line

When you have a leaky AC unit, check the drain line. Your air conditioner has a condensate drain line where water from the unit exits your home. Like most drains, though, the drain line is prone to algae, mold, and other issues that may clog it.

Sometimes a dose of vinegar twice a year can help prevent clogs. But if the problems persist, you’re better off calling the experts.

2. Check Your Refrigerant Level

Refrigerant is what absorbs heat and converts it to cool air. When the refrigerant level is low, that can trigger problems with the evaporator coil. Too much water may drip into the drain pan, and it could overflow.

How do you know if your refrigerant is the culprit? If you hear strange hissing noises or notice that you’re not feeling cool air, you could have an issue. You’re better off asking a professional technician to handle refrigerants.

3. A Faulty Drain Pan Means an Air Conditioner Is Leaking Water

To create cool air, your air conditioning unit pulls in warm air to create moisture. Ultimately, that moisture moves to a drain pan. But when your drain pan is damaged or rusty, it could be leaking water.

You may be able to replace the pan yourself — once you’ve turned off the unit. Then you’ll be back to feeling cool and comfortable during the hot summer months.

4. You Could Have a Clogged Air Filter

A dirty filter can stifle airflow, and that may cause your unit’s evaporator coils to freeze. When the coils don’t get the necessary ventilation, they can grow colder. And when they eventually freeze, the excess water drips to the drain pan.

Over time, the drain pan will overflow. Keep tabs on this issue. If it continues for more than a day or two, it’s time to get your leaky air conditioner treated.

5. A Broken Condensate Pump Leads to a Leaky AC Unit

For water to travel outside your home, your air conditioner needs a functioning condensate pump. A malfunctioning pump won’t push the water outside. Instead, you’ll end up with a leaky air conditioner.

Typically, this problem shows up in air conditioning units installed in basements. You may be able to get away with repairing the pump, but it could require a replacement. Ask your technician what the right solution is.

Take Care of Your Air Conditioner Issues

When your air conditioner is leaking water, determine what part of the unit is causing the problem. You may just need to replace a drain plan. But for more complicated issues, professional service technicians are the right answer.
