According to the U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, homeowners in America spend $29 billion yearly on air conditioning. Sounds like a ridiculously huge amount, right?

Well, air conditioning systems account for only 6% of all electricity produced in the United States. So from an energy front, it can be worth it to stay cooler by utilizing your air conditioning.

Today we’re exploring how air conditioning systems work and fail. You’ll need to replace and repair your AC over time, and doing so can ensure the money and electricity it uses is effective and efficient.

How Do Air Conditioning Systems Work?

While there are many types of air conditioners, most of them work in similar ways. Air conditioner units have many internal parts. Two of the most important and recognizable parts are the evaporator and the condenser.

The evaporator is located on the inside portion of the air conditioner, which is located inside the house. It helps cool warm air inside by blowing the air over cooling coils.

The condenser consists of hot coils and is located outside of the home. The collected heat in the AC conditioning system is released outside your home.

If possible, make sure your air conditioner is not powered by an extension cord. These can cause fires due to overheating and accidents.

There are many more intricacies to an air conditioning system, but this explains the basic premise of a unit. Warm air and humidity are pulled into the system inside the home and released outside of the home.

What Causes Problems and Failures in Air Conditioning Systems?

Unfortunately, your air conditioning system will probably run into problems after months and years of use.

One of the most common causes of air conditioning system failure is loose parts. As the system takes in both hot and cool air, parts inside the system are prone to expand and contract.

This can cause parts of the system to loosen and cause damage inside the system. If you’re hearing strange bumping noises inside your system, loose parts may be to blame.

Another common problem with air conditioners is a leak of refrigerant fluid. This fluid enables the system to rapidly cool and release hot air. If there is a leak in your unit, this can cause a hiss as the fluid dissipates on hot surfaces.

If you suspect that your unit is having one or more of these problems, it may be time to seek out professional air conditioning repair. We at Bowersox Air Conditioning & Heating maintain all brands of air conditioning systems.
