With fall weather around the corner, you may soon be pumping heat into your home. The question is, is the hair filling your home good for you to breathe?

If you’re not sure, then this is a sign that you might need to have your ducts cleaned, as you might be long overdue.

So, how often should you clean your air ducts? When it comes to ensuring the health of your home and family, here are a few simple rules to consider this fall season.

Let’s get started!

A Look at the Air in Your Home

The air ducts in your home are passageways that carry heated and cooled air throughout the house. These ducts require maintenance regularly to ensure that they will operate at the maximum level of efficiency long term.

The truth is, the air in your home can have between two times and five times the pollution you would find outside. The impurities that your indoor air contains recirculate throughout the home through your air ducts. And sadly, this can harm your loved ones.

Why Is Cleaning Your Air Ducts Important?

Cleaning your air ducts is critical for improving the quality of your house’s indoor air.

If you don’t regularly clean your ducts, debris, such as allergens and dust, will keep circulating through your house. Unfortunately, this can cause you or your family members to develop respiratory problems.

Meanwhile, if you clean your ducts, the quantity of dust around your home will drop. This will provide for a cleaner and thus more comfortable living space for you and your family.

Specifically, duct cleaning decreases allergy symptoms. That’s because a duct cleaning removes mildew, bacteria, pollen, and pet dander from the air. All of these items can exacerbate allergies.

Even if you’re not one to struggle with allergy issues, getting your ducts cleaned can still help you to breathe more easily long term.

Cleaning your duct also removes any unpleasant smells from your house. These odors may be associated with pets, tobacco, paint fumes, cleaning agents, and mold, for example.

Still, even though cleaning your air ducts is something that you should do often, several factors can help you to determine how frequently to arrange this service.

How Often Should You Clean Your Air Ducts?

As a general rule of thumb, you should your home’s ducts every 3-5 years at least. That’s because this is how long it takes for ducts to accumulate grime and grit following cleanings.

Still, some homeowners should have duct cleanings performed more frequently. You fall under this category if you reside in an older house. In addition, you may want to do more frequent cleanings if you have pets.

Also, let’s say that somebody in your house has a respiratory illness, or maybe someone has allergies. Perhaps someone has issues with dust. In those situations, it may behoove you to schedule duct cleanings more often.

Additional Duct Cleaning Considerations

Another sign that you need an air conditioning duct cleaning is that you see dust in your ducts. In addition, if you’ve seen an increase in your home’s dust, then you might need a cleaning.

If you begin to notice dust around your registers, this is another sign that a cleaning is in order. Likewise, if you to begin to see an increase in your allergy symptoms or respiratory discomfort, then it’s time to schedule a cleaning.

Also, let’s say that creepy crawlers have made themselves comfortable in your home’s ducts. In this situation, they can contaminate your indoor air with their odor and debris.

Therefore, if you notice pests around or in your ductwork, you need to hire a duct cleaner. Likewise, if you notice that your HVAC system’s performance is declining, you need a proper duct cleaning. This type of cleaning can eliminate vermin and keep them at bay going forward.

Other Times to Hire an Air Duct Cleaner

An air duct cleaning should also be done as soon as you move into an existing home. This is especially wise if the previous owner of the home owned pets or smoked. It’s also a smart move if the former owner failed to service the home’s ducts during the past three years.

Even if you’re erecting a new house, you may still want to clean your ducts. Why? Because this will help to eliminate construction debris, such as drywall dust, from your house.

In the same manner, if you have completed a remodeling project at your home, you should get your ducts cleaned. This will prevent remnants of the project, such as sawdust, from infiltrating your home’s ducts.
