Have you noticed that your air conditioner isn’t cooling the house as it’s supposed to be doing? Well, there could be a wide range of reasons as to why that’s happening.

Here are a few of the most common reasons for failing AC conditioners. You can solve some of these conditions by yourself while others require a professional AC technician.

1. Your Thermostat Has Issues

If your air conditioner isn’t cooling your home, the first point to check should be the thermostat. It’s surprising how many AC issues are traced back to a faulty thermostat. First, check if the temperature and other settings are set correctly.

A recent power outage could have reset the thermostat settings. Make sure it’s not just turned “ON” because that doesn’t guarantee it will supply cold air. Set it to “COOL” or set the temperatures to a few degrees (say 6 degrees) below your home temperature.

2. Your Unit Was Not Installed Properly

If your AC unit is new but not cooling the house as is supposed, it could have been installed incorrectly. The unit could also be too big or too small for your home.

Consider asking another AC company to inspect your system and find out what the problem could be. If the unit was poorly installed, get the work re-done, and you’ll save more money in the long-term.

3. The Unit’s Condenser Is Dirty

The condenser is often placed outside the home for optimal heat exchange performance. Because of this exposure, it accumulates dirt, dust, and other foreign particles.

Dirt accumulation hampers the unit’s functionality. It makes it difficult for the system to cool air effectively. Luckily, it’s easy to solve this problem.

Clear any weeds and grass growing around the unit. Take out any leaves and other obstacles that may be obstructing airflow to the system. Then clean the condenser with water and a gentle detergent to clear off any attached dirt or grime.

Take care not to break or damage the condenser fins when washing around them.

4. The Unit’s Air Filter Is Clogged

If your air conditioner isn’t cooling the house, the problem could be poor airflow. Air filters in the AC play a significant role in ensuring cool air circulates into the home.

If they are dirty and clogged, they’ll obstruct airflow. This can cause your AC to function inefficiently. Check the air filters and clean or replace them if they’re worn-out and beyond saving.

5. There’s a Refrigerant Leak or Damage to the AC Component

Your AC may not be cooling the house because it’s damaged. Perhaps someone hit it, or an object fell on it, and now one of its components (say a motor or compressor) is not working.

The AC could also have a refrigerant leak. When there’s low refrigerant in an AC, the unit can’t cool your home as required. If you notice the refrigerant level in the AC has reduced, call a professional repair expert immediately.
